Peachbelt School, Ganges Township, Allegan County, Michigan

Location: 42.59351, -86.16187, at 6292 124th Avenue, Fennville, MI.

Peachbelt School (Ganges Fractional District No. 1) is the oldest known existing one-room schoolhouse in Allegan County, Michigan. It was built using frame construction in 1867, the brick veneer was added in 1898 or 1899, plumbing was added in 1930, and was closed in 1971. It was turned into a summer house in 1983, was a one-room private residence in 1999, and is now an artist's gallery named "The Peachbelt Studio Gallery". It is a red brick schoolhouse, with yellow "embroidery" brickwork around doors and windows, under the roof eaves, and along the corners of the building. This type of brickwork is common in areas settled by the Dutch. A bell tower still exists, but is covered with louvres so the school bell is not visible, but several fairly recent sources state it still is present, and still works. The front of the building features one centered double door with a transom window above it, and a large window on either side. There are 3 large windows on each side of the schoolhouse.
