Somerset Center School, Somerset Township, Hillsdale County, Michigan

Location: 42.05193, -84.41592, at 12240 E Chicago Rd, Somerset Center, MI.

Somerset Center School was built in 1882. It is a red-brick rectangular structure on a fieldstone foundation with a built-out foyer for the no-longer-visible front door. The building was placed such that it was wider than it was deep, suggesting that maybe it was a two-room schoolhouse, one on the left half, one on the right half, but I have no evidence of that beside that the building is wider than it is deep. It is now the back half of Grace Baptist Church, serving as a kitchen and perhaps a social room. The building was once quite beautiful, with many large wooden corbels under the roof eaves, attached to deeply-projecting brick layers at the top of the walls. There were 8 huge arched windows, one on either side of the front door, two on each side of the building, and two in the back, with projecting brickwork arches above them all and on the top part of their sides, and a concrete keystone at the center of the arch. The back windows have been converted into doors, and the front windows are almost completely covered by the huge frontal addition which is the main part of the church. There are also projecting brickwork columns at the four corners of the building and at the center of the two sides and back of the building, between the windows.
