White Rock School, Sherman Township, Huron County, Michigan

Location: 43.70879, -82.61312, at 10124 White Rock Road, Harbor Beach, Michigan, on the south side of White Rock Road in a park on Grant Street.

White Rock School is a beautifully-restored red-brick schoolhouse, originally built in 1909. It still retains its bell tower, including its school bell, its chimney in the back of the building where the pot belly stove vented, and boys and girls outhouses on opposite sides of the field behind it. It was named after a boulder in Lake Huron that was used as a landmark in the Indian Treaty of 1807. The village was settled around 1860, but destroyed in the Great Fire of 1871. The first schoolhouse was built as the city was rebuilt, but it burned down in the Great Fire of 1881, after which this schoolhouse was built. 25 pupils attended the school in 1909, and the teacher was paid $40 per month. The schoolhouse was in use until 1968, and the Huron County Historical Society acquired it in 1970 and transformed it into this beautiful historical museum.

The schoolhouse has 3 large arched windows on each side. The front face has two doors (one for boys, one for girls) with a large arched window between them. The back of the schoolhouse has an emergency exit door, probably added long after its initial construction. The 7 windows and 2 front doors (though not the rear door) have a 2-row arch of edge-on bricks above them. The schoolhouse is protected by a metal roof.
