Mt. Hope School, Waterloo Township, Jackson County, Michigan

Location: 42.32369, -84.21009, at 6244 Mt Hope Rd, Grass Lake, MI.

Mt. Hope School (Waterloo District No 10) was built in 1866. It's a rectangular red-brick structure on a fieldstone foundation. It has a single centered front door with a wooden school identification sign above it which reads "Mt. Hope School 1866 Dist. No. 10". No bell tower or school bell or chimney remains on this schoolhouse, and it has an asphalt-shingle roof. A large arched window is on either side of the front door, and 3 more are on each side of the building. The 6 side windows have a 2-row arch of non-projecting edge-on bricks. The front door and two windows have an intricate 3-layer arch of bricks above them. The innermost arch is a single row of edge-on bricks laid flush with the front surface of the school. The next outer arch is slightly projected, and the outermost arch is even more projected. I find this design one of the most aesthetically appealing of the simpler brick adornments on the Michigan schoolhouses I've encountered.
