Weller School, Chesterfield Township, Macomb County, Michigan

Location: 42.65013, -82.82103, near 47275 Sugarbush Rd, New Baltimore, MI.

Weller School (Chesterfield District No 1) is said to have been built in the 1880s though records exist for the school back to 1862. Specifically, reports in 1862 filed with the State of Michigan by the School Inspectors for the Township of Chesterfield shows a school known as District 1 (Weller School) situated on Gratiot Avenue at 22 Mile Road. Classes were taught continuously in that school until 1954. After the school closed it became a real-estate office, but was donated to Chesterfield Township in 1996. The township moved the schoolhouse and its outhouse onto the township office land in August 1996, and fully restored it. The schoolhouse has 3 rather small windows on each side and two front doors, one for boys, the other for girls. Each has a transom window above it to let light into the cloakrooms. An annex was added to the back of the schoolhouse for a furnace, restroom and storage. The bell tower was rebuilt in 2021 (after my first two photos below) in honor of the 25th anniversary of the schoolhouse move. My 3rd photo below shows part of that bell tower ready to be installed.

I returned on June 22, 2021, and the finishing touches were being made to the bell tower. I was also able to photograph the inside of the schoolhouse that day.

I returned again on May 20, 2023 to see the completed restoration.
