Whiteford Center School, Whiteford Township, Monroe County, Michigan
Location: 41.77644, -83.68192, at the southeast corner of Whiteford Center Rd and W Temperence Rd.Whiteford Center School (Whiteford District No 6) is a great-looking brick schoolhouse that was built in 1888. A bell tower stands on its sturdy metal roof, with a school bell inside. Three large windows on each side let in plenty of light for students, and decorative brickwork arches at the top of the windows and door add visual interest. The schoolhouse was nearly converted into a fire station before Whiteford Township turned it over to the Whiteford Heritage Association of Members in 1995, which spent $35,000 to rebuild the roof, replace the chimney, sand and re-stain desks, install new bathrooms, and make other repairs. |
