I've driven around Michigan (well, mainly Lower Michigan thus far) during 2015-2019 to photograph old one-room schoolhouses or other interesting historical places. Part of my reason was to preserve through my photographs the one-room schoolhouses which I suspect will be gone within a generation from now. I'd envisioned trying to publish a successor to Mary Keithan's superb "Michigan One-Room Schoolhouses" coffee table book, but I've decided it would be silly for me to pursue something this complex instead of the much simpler publication of this "Michigan Yesterday" web site. So here it is... photos from places destined to crumble, along with whatever meager information about them I've been willing to spend time gathering. I hope you enjoy perusing the site and find the photographs pleasing.
I've bolded what I think are the most photographically worthy or at least those with more complete coverage than average. I've provided GPS coordinates and/or addresses for the sites which have not been converted into private residences (several schoolhouses, thank goodness, have been preserved by such a conversion) so you can go visit these sites for yourself in real life. I've chosen the simplistic alphabetic organization for this web site by county and school name, then below in parallel by date-of-most-recent-update in case you want to follow along as I build this site.
