North Grove District No 6 School, Fremont Township, Tuscola County, Michigan

Location: 43.39433, -83.38376, at the southwest corner of Mertz Rd (M-24) and E North Grove Rd.

North Grove District No 6 School was built in 1910 and in use until 1966, when it closed due to the children being switched to a school five miles south in Mayville. It is a gorgeous brick structure with intricate multi-colored brickwork, which accounts for the high price to build the school of over $1200 (about $32,000 in 2021). I'm displaying a few color images below in addition to my normal black-and-white-only approach to these schoolhouses, so the brickwork can be appreciated. Over the years several changes were made, including a new furnace in the basement and relocation of the school's chimney to be in the central part of the building (the chimney is dated 1925 near the top), the addition of indoor plumbing and bathrooms. An assessment of the building's structure in 2016 concluded that the building is "not salvageable" and plans to raze the building due to its hazardous condition have been made. Yet some locals have high hopes that it can be saved and used for reunions, weddings, etc. It still stands as of Feb 24, 2019. It would be a great loss if torn down.
