A Tourist in Rome - Geta
Birth: | March 7, 189 AD |
Death: | December 19/26, 211 AD (murdered by his brother, Caracalla) |
Emperor: | 209 AD - death |
Publius Septimius Geta was emperor with his father Septimius Severus and his older brother Caracalla from 209 AD when he was named augustus like his brother who had held the title since 198 AD. Septimus Severus died in 211 and although he intended for his sons to rule together, Caracalla murdered Geta instead. Caracalla then ordered the "damnation of his memory" (meaning "erasure from history") which was carried out completely. You can see evidence of this on the Arch of the Money-Changers and the Arch of Septimius Severus. Very few portraits exist of Geta since Caracalla ordered him to be wiped from history,
