Delaware District No 6 School, Delaware Township, Sanilac County, Michigan

Location: 43.62246, -82.68787, on the south side of Snay Rd half way between Hunt Rd and Maple Grove Rd.

Delaware District No 6 School is a red brick schoolhouse on a fieldstone foundation, unusual in the fact that it has a hip roof instead of the more traditional gable roof used in most one-room schoolhouses. No sign remains identifying the school, and in fact, I'm very unsure that this is the correct name for the school since it was simply identified in a catalog as "School6". I suspect this is correct, though, since the schoolhouse 2 miles down the road is called "School3" in that same catalog, and has a sign identifying it as Delaware School District No 3. No bell tower remains on Delaware District No 6 School, but an outhouse remains behind the building. The school walls follow a normal pattern with a single centered front doorway with a large window on either side, and 3 large windows on both sides of the building. The windows have either 2 or 3 rows of edge-on non-projecting bricks forming an arch above them, and there are projecting rows and columns of bricks along the bottom, under the roof eave, along the corners and between the windows. Some of the brickwork and mortar has been repaired, but there are a few large cracks in the mortar on the front face of the school which are opening up sizeable gaps in the wall.
